 How to lighten a photo in Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to quickly lighten a shaded photo. I'll be working in Photoshop CC, but this tutorial is fully compatible with the CS6 version.

Today's digital cameras, smartphones, and other devices make taking pictures of family, friends, and anything else that pleases our eyes easy and effortless. As long as there is space on the memory card or internal memory of the device, nothing limits us, we will take as many photos as we need.


But what to do if some photo doesn't turn out as well as we'd like. It might be darkened (underexposed) or too bright light (overexposed).



If you're a professional Photoshop user, you know that you can fix this with Levels and Curves, which will allow you to make tonal corrections at the highest level. But if it's a photo taken just for fun, and you don't care how it should look through the eyes of a pro photographer. You just want it to look a little better, without any professional "overtones," then this problem (in our case, it's shading) can be solved without too much hassle.


Fortunately, in Photoshop, you can easily fix minor problems of that nature in a matter of seconds. All we need is an adjustment layer and a blending mode.


Let's get to work!


Here's a photo that was taken on a trip to Niagara Falls. It was a cloudy, overcast day, but the photo came out darker than it really was.


From a professional standpoint, I would have needed to do some proper tonal correction with levels, curves, or even Camera Raw. But I just need it to look brighter with minimal effort.


Open the problem photo in Photoshop. Notice the layers panel, currently only our photo is there.


How to brighten a photo in Photoshop


To quickly brighten your image, add an adjustment layer called Levels. To do this, click the create adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
